When the owner of Mimi & Pipi’s came to us with a vision for his new Italian restaurant in Grayling, we knew this project would be something special.

Named after his grandparents—Mimi and Pipi—the restaurant draws creative inspiration from the warmth and character of a 1930s urban Italian eatery. Classy yet casual. Stylish but welcoming.

A Design Rooted in Nostalgia

Our work began with the logo, which was created knowing it would live within a circular sign format. The client shared a collection of vintage imagery—old restaurant, gas station, and pub signs—that established a direction for the overall aesthetic. From there, we developed a look that’s bold and eye-catching, even from blocks away.

Interior design elements and classic Italian café signage influenced everything from typography to color palette. The end result is a custom-crafted identity that feels like it’s been part of the community for generations.

Bringing It to Life

The centerpiece is a large, double-sided illuminated projection sign with retro-inspired marquee LED lighting around the edge. To achieve the rusted corten steel appearance, the sign’s aluminum cabinet and structure were hand-painted with a faux finish and sealed with a UV matte clear coat for texture and longevity.

One of the most striking details is the domed sign faces. These were reverse-printed on clear polycarbonate and vacuum-formed using custom molds we designed and provided to a trusted form specialist to produce the finished faces. Heated to over 400 degrees during the forming process, the result is a beautifully dimensional feature. Combined with thoughtful lighting and finishes, it brings an old-world charm to life in a fresh, modern way.

In addition to the main sign, vinyl logo graphics were installed at both the front and rear entrances to help extend the branding and maintain visual consistency for guests arriving from either direction.
