It’s official! After 48 memorable and successful years in the sign business, Bob and Erin Scudder have retired!

Bob started Sign and Design in 1974 out of the basement of his home in Pellston. A few years later, he built a 1248 square foot shop next to his home and then, in 1980, added another 575 square feet to it. During that same timeframe Bob met Erin, and by March of the following year, she joined him in running the business.

As would be expected, there have been a multitude of ups and downs over the years. Erin says she’s “fairly sure [they] went through every scenario possible with employees, customers, materials, equipment, and buildings . . . including a fire and a flood”. Through it all, they persevered and not only survived but thrived. It would be difficult to travel far in any direction in northern Michigan without spotting some of the handiwork they created.

A few years ago, Bob and Erin decided it was time to start thinking about slowing down. When Pro Image purchased Sign and Design from them in December of 2013, they agreed to stay and help make the transition as smooth as possible. What initially was to be a couple of years at Pro Image turned into eight.

The time has come for them to officially say goodbye (at least in the business sense). The Scudders will be missed, not only around the shop, but also by the thousands of customers they have served over the years. We are happy for them to be able to slow down and enjoy these well-deserved years of retirement. Congratulations to Bob and Erin!
