When Joshua Schultz reached out to us back in February about a sign for his Eagle Scout project, we knew we wanted to get on board. His goal: create a new sign for the Charlevoix Rod and Gun Club, which also is the location of his scout meetings.

Since Joshua started as a Cub Scout, he has been steadily working his way to Eagle Scout. The rank is the highest that a young person can reach, and it’s not easy, with only about 6% of all scouts reaching the esteemed goal before their 18th birthday (which is the cutoff). Multiple requirements must be fulfilled to achieve the rank. Each Eagle Scout must obtain 7 scouting ranks, acquire 21 merit badges, complete an Eagle Service Project, become a leader within their troop and create their final Eagle Scout binder.

The idea for Josh’s project came simply. The Rod and Gun Club’s sign was faded and not easy to see. This became apparent over the years as his Mother had difficulty spotting it when dropping him off for meetings. Josh developed a plan back in January, and began the service project by fundraising through donations and can drives.

When it came to actually building the sign, he knew he needed the help of professionals. After some online research and asking around, Josh chose Pro Image Design because he liked our work. A budget was established and the new sign project steadily took shape.

Josh quickly learned there many facets involved in managing a project of this scale. Organization, local government ordinances, board meetings, presentations, decision making and communication are just a few of the experiences he gained throughout the job. He also obtained some hands-on experience by removing the existing sign, and completing paint work on the pole structure.

The sign was installed back in July, with some details completed later that month. Joshua is now back in school and busy with football (and of course Scouts)! Paperwork, photos, time logs, merit badges and applications have all been submitted to the Scout Council board. He is now looking forward to receiving his Eagle Scout rank this fall, before his 18th birthday in November.

That’s a project we can get behind!
